Even as the industrial units in Tivim Industrial Estate made a requisition for some concession on garbage collection charges, the Mapusa civic body overlooked their appeal and decided to charge Rs 5,000 per waste collection trip.
The Mapusa Municipal Council (MMC), which has been struggling to collect waste from the city, has also decided to write to the industrial units demanding a truck, driver, and two laborers through corporate social responsibility (CSR).
For the moment, the big and small industrial units at Tivim industrial estate pay the same charges for the collection of waste.
The small industrial units in the industrial estate had written to the MMC requesting a concession on garbage collection charges.
They claimed that the waste generated by them was far less than that generated by big industrial units.
Several councillors expressed opposition to the request as the civic body did not get any income from the industries.
“The Industrial Development Corporation (IDC) is collecting house tax, rent, and other revenue from industries in the industrial estate. Why should the municipal council collect only garbage from them? Let the IDC also collect the waste generated by these units,” said Shashank Narvekar.
He said that, as it is, the MMC was facing a shortage of trucks and labor to collect waste from the wards in town.
Several councillors also suggested that the Mapusa Municipal Council (MMC) should write and request the industries to provide the council with one truck and a few laborers for the collection of waste as part of CSR activity.
The councillors also suggested fixing a uniform rate for the collection of garbage per trip to overcome the disparity between the big and small industrial units.
MMC Chairperson Priya Mishal acknowledged the views of her colleagues and agreed to impose a fixed rate of Rs 5,000 per garbage collection trip.
Mishal also agreed to write to the industrial units with a request to provide the municipal council with a truck, driver, and two laborers.
