The Mapusa Municipal Council (MMC) on Wednesday unanimously resolved to issue permission for road cutting to the Sewerage and Infrastructure Development Corporation of Goa Ltd (SIDCGL) to provide individual sewer connections in Mapusa.
In another key decision, the council agreed to issue consent to the electricity department for road cutting for laying of underground cabling in town.
MMC Chairperson Shubhangi Vaigankar informed the council that sewer connections to individual households will be provided in three phases.
She said connections to Wards 7, 8, 19 and 20 will be taken up in the first phase as houses from these wards are near to the sewerage treatment plant.
“We will see how the sewerage system works once houses in these wards are connected to the network. Accordingly, permissions can be issued to houses in other wards in the next phase,” Vaigankar said, while addressing the councillors at the ordinary council meeting.
Councillor Shashank Narvekar said the municipal council had failed to attach a plan of how the sewerage corporation would go about issuing the connections.
Initially, the council had decided to issue connections to only three wards (7, 8 and 20) but later on the demand of the councillors decided to include Ward 19, which includes market area.
“Most establishments in the market release its sewage into the nullah nearby which finds its way into the Mapusa river. It’s therefore important that Ward 19 is included in the first phase,” said Councillor and former chairperson Sudhir Kandolkar.
The council decided to give conditional NOC to the electricity department for road cutting to lay underground cabling.
The NOC will be subject to all work of underground cabling in Mapusa will be completed within two years and, secondly, wherever the cable laying work is completed the dug up, the road has to be patched up within a month.
“People had to suffer for almost four years when the roads in Mapusa were dug up while laying the sewerage pipelines. We do not want a repeat of the same,” said Narvekar, councillor of Ward 5.
In another decision, the council has decided to renovate community and public toilets and urinals in town and implement pay parking on three new lanes.
The council also resolved to hotmix several internal roads in various wards which were pending due to code of conduct.
