MAPUSA
Taking strong exception to the “breach of trust” by the Sewerage & Infrastructural Development Corporation of Goa Ltd (SIDCGL), the Mapusa Municipal Council (MMC) on Friday unanimously resolved not to allow a second sewage treatment plant at Camarcazana in Mapusa.
Blaming SIDCGL for keeping the civic body in the dark over the project, councillors said the sewerage corporation first obtained NOC for the Mapusa STP and based on that permission, quietly began work on the second STP meant for Porvorim.
“It’s a complete breach of trust on the part of SIDCGL. They took NOC for construction of sewerage plant for Mapusa and used the same NOC to begin work on the second STP meant for Porvorim,” said Ryan Braganza, senior councilor and a member of Mapusa communidade.
Strongly objecting to the second STP, councillor Rajsingh Rane said the council should not allow other people’s dirt to enter in Mapusa.
“Let them build an STP on their own land. We will not allow an STP for other villages in our territory,” Rane said.
He said the construction material that has been dumped at the site should be immediately seized and a police complaint should be lodged against the sewerage corporation. Earlier, Vice Chairperson and local councillor Marlene D’Souza moved the resolution to deny additional extension to the sewerage treatment plant or no separate STP located in Camarcazan, Mapusa for Porvorim and Sangolda.
“If we have to increase the capacity of the STP for Mapusa we will allow to do so and the extra land around the STP can be used for the purpose. But under no circumstances will we allow an STP for Porvorim,” D’Souza said.
Acknowledging the concerns of his colleagues, MMC Chairperson Rohan Kavlekar said the council would write to the Sewerage & Infrastructural Development Corporation of Goa Ltd on the issue.
It may be recalled the residents of Camarcazana in ward 8 had recently opposed the second STP and along with local MLA Glen Ticlo and councilor, Marlene D’Souza had stopped the work on the project.
Further, the Mapusa communidade had revoked the NOC granted to SIDCGL.
...Decides not to allow high-rise buildings in Camarcazana
MAPUSA: Bowing to the concerns of the residents of Camarcazana, Mapusa Municipal Council on Friday decided not to allow multi-storied or high-rise buildings in Camarkhazan, in ward 8 of Mapusa and to declare the area as settlement zone instead of commercial.
Vice Chairperson and local councilor, Marlene D’Souza moved the resolution seeking immediate ban on construction of multi-storied or high-rise buildings or any construction of ground plus two floors in Camarkhazan falling in Ward 8. The resolution also said that the area should be declared as settlement zone and not commercial zone.
The residents of Camarcazana had relentlessly pursued on the matter of illegal constructions of high-rise buildings in their village. They had also petitioned to the TCP Minister Vijai Sardessai against change of zoning in Camarcazana at the behest of the builder’s lobby and certain politicians.
The Goan had taken up the issue of the villagers in a series of reports in this daily.
