Mapusa councillors raise alarm over municipal staff misconduct

Contract staffer under fire for alleged misuse of power

MAPUSA

The Mapusa Municipal Council (MMC) is facing controversy as councillors raise concerns about staff misplacement and misconduct. They claim staff hired for specific roles are being moved to unrelated departments, affecting the council’s functioning.

The matter involves a contract staffer hired as a junior stenographer who was shifted to the automobile section. Councillor Tarak Arolkar, in a complaint to the Chief Officer, said this change is harming productivity.

“Although hired as a junior stenographer, he is now doing automobile engineering tasks, which is outside his role. This raises questions about administration and affects the council’s efficiency,” Arolkar said.

He also alleged the staffer is misusing his position, facing complaints of harassment and fund misappropriation. Councillor Shashank Narvekar also raised concerns, accusing the staffer of unethical behaviour.

“Since his transfer, there have been complaints of inflated bills, causing financial strain on the council,” Narvekar said.

Both councillors demanded immediate action, with Arolkar urging that the staffer be moved back to his post to maintain the council’s integrity and staff morale.

Efforts to get a response from MMC Chairperson Priya Mishal were unsuccessful.
