After fresh theft, authorities promise action on surveillance and security gaps
MAPUSA
A recent theft in the Mapusa market has once again brought attention to long-pending security measures, with authorities repeating the need for CCTV surveillance — an issue discussed for years with little progress.
The Mapusa Municipal Council (MMC) and Mapusa Police held a joint meeting to review safety in the market and nearby areas. One of the main decisions was to install CCTV cameras at key points, including entry and exit areas of the town. However, similar plans have been announced in the past without being carried out. MMC Chairperson Priya Mishal said the council will prioritise the installation of cameras and has started the process.
Despite such assurances earlier, the lack of a working CCTV system in the busy market continues to be a concern, especially with repeated thefts. The meeting also stressed the need to improve night-time security. It was decided to deploy more guards through Goa HRD and improve coordination between municipal staff and police.
Vendor-related issues were also discussed, with instructions not to leave goods on roads after market hours. Authorities suggested using vacant MMC shops as shared storage spaces to reduce clutter and lower the risk of theft. Mapusa market, one of North Goa’s busiest commercial hubs, has long faced problems such as congestion, poor regulation and weak security systems. While the latest meeting has again highlighted these issues, proper implementation of decisions remains a major challenge.
