Mapusa Police got cracking on helmetless riding and managed to book around 500 cases of riding without helmets in the last four days while simultaneously educating the public on the pitfalls of violating traffic rules.
On Monday, Mapusa Police Station and the Traffic Cell, Mapusa conducted a surprise joint drive in town to challan those who violated the Motor Vehicle Act.
“We have taken this sudden drive to crack down traffic rules violation due to spurt in accident cases in the State. Presently we are concentrating on those who are not wearing helmets. It will go on for the entire week. So far we have booked around 500 cases without helmets,” said Mapusa PI, Paresh Naik.
He said the Mapusa Police has also been publishing photos of those people who have not worn helmets and challans would be sent to them.
“Those who we cannot stop, we click photos and then serve notices to them at home for challan. We will not tolerate two-wheeler riders without helmets. This is a small initiative to prevent fatal accidents in our jurisdiction,” he said.
According to Mapusa Traffic Cell PI, Tushar Lotlikar, violators will be booked and also educated on the consequences of not following traffic rules.
“Such surprise drives will continue. Our aim is to issue challans to those who do not follow the Motor Vehicle Act rules. Simultaneously, we will also educate and make them aware why people should follow traffic rules,” Lotlikar said.
It may be recalled Mapusa SDPO, Jivba Dalvi had taken an initiative to depute police personnel on different routes to shoot photos of riders who do not wear helmets in the Mapusa sub-division which includes Mapusa, Colvale and Anjuna Police Stations.
Police have managed to trap several helmetless riders in the last couple of days in the jurisdiction of all three police stations.
Such drives against violators of traffic rules have started all over the State.
