Fielding five candidates under the panel of Shree Bodgeshwar Development Front and extending support to two others, NCP General Secretary Sanjay Barde on Thursday said the panel will not back any group to form the council in Mapusa but would work to be a worthy opposition.
“Ours is an independent panel without any political backing. After election, our victorious candidates will not back any group to form the council in the Mapusa civic body, instead our aim is to give a strong opposition to the ruling group in Mapusa Municipal Council,” Barde said.
The NCP general secretary was addressing a news conference along with the five candidates who are contesting the civic polls in Mapusa under the banner of the Shree Bodgeshwar Development Front.
The five candidates contesting under the Shree Bodgeshwar Development Front are Gauspir Benkepur (Ward 14), Manita Gadekar (Ward 15), Suhas Sakhalkar (Ward 16), Vaishali Barde (Ward 17) and Reshma Mathker (Ward 18).
Continuing, Barde said in the last five years the ruling BJP panel steamrolled the opposition in the Mapusa civic body.
“Without a strong opposition, it was one-way traffic in the Mapusa Municipal Council. The councillors allied to BJP did whatever they wanted. Nobody challenged them or tried to expose their shortcomings. The result was no development in Mapusa,” he said.
He said in the 2015 manifesto, the BJP gave a commitment to build the Ravindra Bhavan, provide good roads and complete the sewerage project, but none of the promises were kept.
He said most roads in Wards 15, 16, 17 and 18 in Khorlim were in worse condition.
“The BJP had come out with a vision document in the 2015 council election in Mapusa. It turned out to be a big jumla. This time people should not fall prey to their false promises,” Barde said.
He said the Shree Bodgeshwar Development Front will work to deliver time-bound civic amenities to all the citizens in a transparent manner.
The Bodgeshwar Front promised to build a ‘Ganapati Veesarjan Lake’ with a jogging track alongside it, develop open spaces into gardens and playgrounds, improvement of essential infra such as roads, water, drainage etc.
