Deputy Chief Minister Francis D’Souza said he saw nothing wrong in introducing yoga as part of school curriculum, as yoga is a science that synchronizes the body and the mind.
“There is no harm in including yoga in the curriculum. It’s helping people and why should it not be,” D’Souza said.
The deputy chief minister was speaking to The Goan on the sidelines of a yoga day function organized by the Urban Health Center in Mapusa.
“Yoga is the best science that has gained international recognition. We have to use this science as it does not cost us anything. I know people across the communities who practice yoga,” he said.
He also praised Baba Ramdev and his form of yoga and the energy he derives from practicing the science.
“The type of yoga that Baba Ramdev does is amazing. I don’t say all should achieve that level, but at least we all can practice yoga to some minimum level,” he added.
He further said the yoga day, on Sunday, was especially organised only with an aim to focus on the discipline and that it should be made a part of daily life.
“Yoga should not be restricted to only one day. It should be held throughout the year. Today’s day was organised to focus on the discipline,” he said.
Earlier, D'Souza opened the yoga day celebration organised by the Urban Health Center, Mapusa, in association with Dnyanprasarak Vidayala High School at the Vaishaya Hall in Mapusa.
School children drawn from schools in Mapusa went through a yoga drill under the tutelage of Dr Siddesh Parab.
Mapusa Urban Health Center Health Officer Dr Cheryl D’Souza, Medical Officer Dr Shilpa Tople and Headmistress of Dnyanprasarak Vidayala High School Shanti Sirsat were present for the function along with the staff of UHC and the teachers of Dnyanprasarak Vidayala HS.
