Deputy Collector, Margao Jyoti Kumari, IAS has ordered the handing over of the Nehru stadium, Fatorda and the Manohar Parrikar indoor stadium, Navelim to the Margao Municipal Chief Officer to set up two 25-bedded Covid care centres in the city.
The MMC Covid care centres, however, are not expected to take shape overnight as the government is yet to take a call on drafting doctors and nurses to man the two centres.
In fact, while the proposed Covid care centres has started receiving aid from good Samaritans in the form of beds, oximeters, oxygen concentrators, face masks et al, the absence of government medical staff, including doctors and nurses has put the commissioning of the two Covid care centres on hold.
As a last ditch effort to ensure that the proposal to set up the two centres takes off without any last minute hiccups, the Margao Municipal Chief Officer, Agnelo Fernandes has written to the government to depute eight nurses and four medical officers to man the two Covid care centres.
But, with the civic body receiving no reply from the government till date, the MMC Chief Officer has knocked the doors of the IMA, Margao branch to consider offering their services to the two proposed Covid care centres at Fatorda and Margao to be commissioned shortly.
In his appeal, the CO reminded that ferocity of the second Covid wave was unexpected and unseen and as such citizens are caught unawares. “Let us reach out to them to save lives as much as possible. Both the Covid care centres will be commissioned shortly. My sincere appeal goes to every doctor of Margao to give back to society little time they receive,” he said.
The Chief Officer said that offering one hour by the private doctors under the IMA banner to the proposed centres can help bring cheer to the people in distress.
“The aim of these two proposed centres is to provide an isolation and care facility for mild Covid positive citizens of Margao and Fatorda who may not require intensive care but find it difficult to isolate at their home and for those who require constant supervision by Health professionals. If this centres are opened other hospitals can concentrate on serious cases in ESI and SGDH,” he said.
The CO added: “There are about 350 IMA doctors from Margao who are requested to help in this need of hour. Many councillors and philanthropists have assured their whole-hearted support to the civic body.”
