The waste mound on the Nuvem-Arlem stretch of the Eastern bypass.
MARGAO
The Margao Eastern bypass has virtually turned into a garbage dumping site, with a waste mound taking shape near the Bokti lake.
That’s not all. The entire stretch of the bypass, from Nuvem junction to Arlem junction, is yet to be illuminated till date for reasons best known to the PWD and the electricity department.
Complaints lodged by local residents of Nuvem as well as motorists that the entire eastern bypass has become a waste dumping ground has not spurred the authorities to illuminate the road stretch to keep unscrupulous elements at bay.
Incidentally, the waste mound has not disappeared despite the fact that government agencies such as the Goa Waste Management Corporation are mandated to clear the road sides of waste.
Congress leader Everson Valles told the media on Thursday that no authority is attending to the waste mound which has been growing in size over the last two years.
He pointed out that leave alone turning the bypass into an eyesore, the waste dumping has taken shape near the Bokti lake on the border of Nuvem-Fatorda.
“It is indeed shocking and surprising that not a single agency has attended to the waste problem till date. I appeal to the authorities to intervene and stop the garbage menace”, Everson demanded.
On the question of illumination, he pointed out that the government had two years ago assured to take up the illumination of the bypass from Nuvem to the Arlem circle, but in vain.
“Besides garbage dumping near Bokti lake, the stretch has become a favourite ground for dumping of all sorts of waste, including meat and chicken waste”, he added.
