The sharp turn at the starting point of the Margao ring road near the Comba subway in the commercial capital is fast turning into a major garbage black spot.

This may sound surprising and interesting too when Margao Municipality and the powers that be controlling the civic boasts of spending crores of rupees on door-to-door waste collection through private contractors.

That’s not all. A garbage black spot at the entrance to the city’s educational hub may throw up questions as what message is the civic body sending to the students and young minds studying in the institutions imparting education, right from kindergarten to post graduation.

A couple of garbage bins were seen dumped at the turn with garbage and bags containing waste all strewn around the area. The situation has drawn dogs and other animals to the site in search of food.

If locals and motorists are to be believed, dumping of waste at the black spot has increased in recent times when the site was not at all a garbage disposal point in the scheme of things of the Margao Municipal Council. “Why are the bins dumped at the site? Are these not an invitation for people from both within the city and outside to come and dispose of the waste at the site,” questioned a local.

He pointed out that MMC should clear the bins as well as the waste from the site, which is becoming an eyesore and a nuisance. Another citizen wondered how come bundles of waste are found lying at the site when it is the duty of the private contractors engaged by the civic body to clear the black spots of the waste.

The locals have feared that unscrupulous elements may dispose of animal carcass and other waste at the site given that it has now become a garbage black spot.

In the past, MMC officials were on the field to maintain vigil at the black spots to reign in on unscrupulous elements from outside the Municipal jurisdiction from disposing of waste in the city limits.
