Margao New Market Traders Association on Tuesday demanded that the Margao Municipal Council clear the illegal vendors occupying footpaths and pavements, which not only cause nuisance but affect the business of the licensed traders.
The traders also urged Margao Municipal Chairperson Damu Shirodkar and Chief Officer Gaurish Sankhwalkar to prioritise the installation of fire-fighting systems around the New Market to handle fire emergencies.
MMC Chairperson Damu Shirodkar has promised full support for the demand to clear the illegal vendors from the footpaths but hastened to add that neither he nor the Chief Officer should receive any phone calls to halt operations against the illegal vendors.
The delegation of traders, led by President Gopal Naik, brought their concerns to the Chairperson’s attention and presented their demands for the smooth functioning of the New Market.
Regarding illegal vendors occupying footpaths, the Market President submitted a list of areas, including the old railway station road, Bank of India, Opposition Kohinoor, and Municipal building, Sadekar Lane, etc., which are occupied by illegal vendors, demanding their permanent removal.
The Association also demanded fixed timings for wholesale fruit vendors, stating that they should cease operations when the retail market begins for the day, despite normally starting their business as early as 4 am.
On fire safety measures, the delegation emphasised to the Civic Chief the urgent need to install a water tank and fire hydrants, which are crucial in case of fire.
While calling for the marking of Market Entry/Exit Gates, the delegation insisted that market gates should be closed by 10.30 pm to allow security personnel to maintain proper control of the market at night.
After listening attentively, Civic Chief Damu Shirodkar stated that the MMC would take action on the demands presented by the New Market Association.
