BICHOLIM:
Investigations revealed that the accused, Amit Kumar Das, also admitted killing his first wife at Anjuna beach in February last year.
According to Bicholim PI Narayan Chimulkar, Das allegedly killed his wife, Helen Sarkar (31), after suspecting her to be involved in intimate relationship with another man.
Police said Das had married Helen at Assam in the first week of February and they had come down to Goa on February 21. He then befriended a person from Kudchirem-Bicholim and the couple was residing at his residence there.
On March 24, the accused entered into an altercation with his wife when she told him that it would have been better had she had married other man. Angered with his wife, the accused strangulated his wife to death sometime at about 11.30 am.
In a bid to destroy evidence, police said the accused dumped the body into an unused laterite stone pit and moved a large boulder on the body, to appear that Helen had died after the boulder had rolled over her body.
The incident came to light on Tuesday morning when a passer by noticed foul smell emanating from the laterite stone pit. Police rushed to the spot and took possession of the body.
During the course of investigation, the accused then confessed his involvement in another murder.
The police stated that the accused had killed his first wife Manideepa (35) on February 1, 2015, by drowning her at Anjuna beach, when they went for sightseeing along with their 5-year-old daughter.
He then went to Assam and told family members that his first wife had eloped with another man.
Bicholim police said the daughter of the accused is studying in KG II at an education institution run by an NGO in Panaji.
Police arrested the accused under Sections 302, 201 of IPC and PI Narayan Chimulkar is investigating the case under the guidance of DySP Ramesh Gaonkar.
