All seven churches in Canacona Deanery observed Maundy Thursday with various services throughout the day and night.

Masses were celebrated in the churches at Chaudi, Agonda, Bhatpal, Chiplem, Sadolxem, Galgibaga and Loliem, with priests observing the symbolic washing of the feet of “apostles”, enacting the event performed by Jesus Christ on his apostles a day before his death.

Incidentally, women were also included in the symbolic washing of the feet in most churches this year, adhering to the new guidelines of Pope Francis.

At Agonda Church, Parish Priest Fr Romeo D’Silva washed the feet of 12 people, which included two girls, two male youth, four women (including a nun) and four men.

Similarly, service was held in all the other churches in Canacona taluka.

Soon after the mass, the Eucharist was brought in a procession and placed in a tabernacle and each Small Christian Community (SCC) group venerated the Eucharist till midnight with prayers.
