The month of May proved to be the most lethal for Goa since June 2020 with over 55 per cent of the state’s total Covid deaths being recorded in this month alone.
Goa’s first Covid fatality was an 85-year-old from Morlem who died at ESI Covid hospital on June 22, 2020.
Of the total 2,649 Covid deaths which have occurred in the state since June 2020, a total of 55.9 per cent or 1,481 have been recorded in the month of May 2021 alone.
Since May 1, the Health Department has recorded 64,614 new Covid cases across Goa and 1,481 Covid deaths with the case fatality rate being posted at a massive high of 2.29 per cent during May this year.
On Monday, the state’s daily Covid bulletin recorded 24 more Covid deaths and 602 new cases of the infection. The testing sample size was 3,004 and the daily positivity rate stood at 20 per cent. With this, the active Covid cases in the state have touched 12,763 and the recovery rate has crossed 90 per cent.
Out of the 24 Covid fatalities recorded on Monday, five deceased patients had received their first dose of Covid vaccine. A total of 16 deaths were recorded at Goa Medical College and Hospital, four at South Goa District Hospital, one at Hospicio and a total of three deaths at Manipal Hospital and Redkar Hospital.
On the other hand, the vaccination drive across the state continues to focus exclusively on the administration of the first dose of Covid vaccine. Only 31 persons were given their second dose of the Covid vaccine on Monday. The total number of fully vaccinated persons in the state has now touched 96,082. Till date, a total of 3.26 lakh people have been partially vaccinated.
