Curti-Khandepar Gram Sabha on Sunday witnessed noisy scenes over the issue of garbage treatment site of Ponda Municipal Council at Keriyem-Khandepar. The members threatened they would stage a rally if PMC doesn't stop garbage dumping.

The Gram Sabha, presided by Sarpanch Deepa Naik, was attended by many of the locals from Khandepar and Curti villages, who are opposed to PMC's move.

It may be recalled that in a joint inspection by panchayat and PMC on December 1, 2015, local panch member and BJP leader Sandeep Khandeparkar had accused PMC of violating the High Court order in regards to treating garbage at Keriyem.

The villagers on Sunday complained that the garbage treatment site was attracting flies and now there is an increase in their number because of the stench.

The locals vented their anger on the panchayat saying it failed to keep a check on the activities of PMC, which has not stopped dumping of garbage despite several requests and agitations. Sarpanch Naik assured to take up the matter with PMC to resolve the issue.

The locals also demanded a special Gram Sabha to discuss the issue to which the panchayat agreed and has decided to fix a date later for the meeting. “I will discuss the issue with other panchas and will convene the meeting to discuss the issue,” the sarpanch assured.

The issue of parking along bypass roads was also raised in the Gram Sabha. The panchas have assured to take action. Locals demanded to take up the issue with officers concerned and to erect signboard like ‘no parking’ in the area.

Also, two cellphone towers installed in the area were opposed by the locals. The panchas said they had not issued any NOC to the cellphone company.
