Following an alliance between the Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party (MGP) and Goa Suraksha Manch (GSM) late Friday night, the seat-sharing formula between the new partners has indicated that the MGP will contest 25 seats, while the GSM will be given the remaining 15 seats at the ensuing assembly polls.
While declining to divulge which of those constituencies would be given to the MGP and GSM, an office bearer at the GSM has, however, confirmed that it would contest the Mayem and Sakhali constituencies.
Both political parties will officially announce their alliance as soon as the election code of conduct comes into force.
Speaking to The Goan, MGP General Secretary and Ponda MLA Lavu Mamledar said: “Our seat-sharing formula is working in the best manner. Our priority is to get elected most of our candidates in the fray. For that to happen, we will plan some strategies in the coming days.”
When contacted, GSM General Secretary Adv Hridhaynath Shirodkar confirmed that Mayem and Sakhali constituencies would have GSM candidates.
“We had submitted a list of constituencies where we have good support. Hence, Mayem and Sakhali constituencies will remain with us. Talks are in progress for Siolim and other constituencies,” said Shirodkar.
According to Shirodkar, the GSM wants to plan carefully with the MGP on the seat-sharing formula. “Our motto is to win in most of the constituencies,” he said.
Meanwhile in a significant blow to the BJP, Mamledar has confirmed that former Sanguem BJP MLA Vasudev Meng Gaonkar is expected to enter the MGP on Sunday.
Gaonkar was denied the BJP ticket in the last assembly election in favour of Subhash Phaldesai, who presently represents Sanguem constituency.
