The Revolutionary Goans Party (RGP) will launch a non-political agitation starting with a public meeting at Azad Maidan, Panaji, on Sunday.
Divulging this to reporters, RGP supremo Manoj Parab informed that the public meeting will be attended by experts, environmentalists, activists and others who have been fighting the Mhadei issue since the past many years.
“At the meeting, awareness will be created on the Mhadei issue, importance of Mhadei to Goa, impact of diversion of its waters, how various political parties have been playing politics on the issue and how the successive governments have sold Mhadei to Karnataka,” Parab stated.
He further urged people belonging to different political parties and who feel that their political leaders have failed on Mhadei, to participate in the meeting as Goans who have concern for their mother Mhadei.
“We are also going to invite all organisations in the State be it religious, non-religious, etc to join in the agitation,” Parab informed and urged Goans to join in large numbers for the meeting.
When questioned by The Goan whether such a meeting would be held in South Goa as well, Parab informed that there were plans to hold a meeting at Lohia Maidan, Margao but due to its unavailability, the plan was dropped.
“However, we are creating awareness in all the villages of Goa, including South Goa, as the Mhadei issue is not restricted only to North as South will also get affected once North thirsts and water from South will have to be diverted,” Parab added.
When questioned on the call given by AAP’s Amit Palekar for RGP to take the lead, Parab shot back and stated that first political parties like Congress and AAP have to come clean on the Mhadei issue.
“If Congress’s Rahul Gandhi or for that matter AAP’s Arvind Kejriwal gives statement that their parties won’t allow diversion of Mhadei’s waters to Karnataka and that they are fully supporting Goa’s cause, then only RGP will join hands with these parties in taking the Mhadei issue together,” Parab opined.
To a question on how the agitation would be a non-political one when the RGP would be spearheading it, Parab said that the main persons who would be in the forefront would be the ones who fought the Mhadei issue on the ground.
“There won’t be political speeches but talks on Mhadei and how the diversion will affect Goa and Goans,” he said.
On whether he expects Kannadigas to join the agitation, Parab replied in the negative as till date, they have not said a single word on the issue.
