Benaulikars will discuss the issue of migrants threadbare at a special gram sabha scheduled on October 20 to prepare a road map on how to deal with outsiders encroaching on local businesses, including plying tourist taxis, fishing and bakery activities, etc and indulging in illegal activities.
This was decided at a meeting between the panchayat body and villagers, who had lodged their complaints against migrants and their illegal activities as well as encroachment in the traditional business activities, threatening to displace the local people.
The panchayat the complainants for discussion as they wanted to find out from the group whether their anger is directed only against a particular group of migrants or migrants in general.
The group, however, pointed out that the issue is not directed against any particular migrant community, but has to be understood in the right perspective, taking into account the ground realities and the presence of migrants as a whole in Benaulim.
The group drew the attention of the panchayat body to the illegal business activities carried out by migrant groups under the guise of selling garments and imitation jewelry. They also pointed out that the Panchayat should come out with a road map on how to go about cracking the whip against migrants creating nuisance by way of garbage and open defecation.
Sunday’s meet will help hear the views of the people who have employed migrants in their businesses before taking a decision on how to go about the issue.
