Highly placed sources from SIT informed that as the technical head, Shetgaonkar was involved in inspection of several sites in Goa, where alleged illegal extraction of iron ore weighing lakhs of metric tonnes was carried out.
"Despite being in the know of the illegalities, Shetgaonkar failed to initiate criminal action into the theft of iron ore by individuals and firms thereby facilitating perpetrators in wrongful gain in crores of rupees and wrongful loss to the state exchequer,"
Superintendent of Police (Crime) Karthik Kashyap stated, adding that such unlawful act and omissions on the part of public servants cannot be done without monetary benefits.
As per SIT's ongoing investigation, Shetgaonkar was dealing with the Amalia Figueiredo lease file wherein by virtue of Power of Attorney, Imran Khan and brothers operated the mine illegally as proxy to a top politician who held the Mines portfolio.
"As a public servant he failed to proceed with the legal action and allowed Imran Khan and others to operate the mine illegally," SP Kashyap said.
In addition to this, Shetgaonkar while dealing with one more lease file allowed one Rajesh Timblo to pay Government dues prior to transfer of lease in his name, sources disclosed.
