GSL to ink deal on tech-transfer

A delegation of South Korean companies visited Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL) in connection with the minesweeper order which GSL has bagged from the central government.
Sources also informed that a number of shipyards from Goa and components manufacturers from other parts of India were also part of the meeting. The purpose behind the South Korean delegation’s visit was to ink agreements which would amount to transfer of technology from South Korean companies to Indian companies to manufacture minesweepers within India.
Minesweepers are naval warships, which are designed to remove explosive naval mines. GSL had got an order worth Rs 32,400 crore from Ministry of Defense to manufacture 12 minesweepers in 2014.
Earlier, the central government had given a contract to a South-Korean company to build minesweepers in 2008. But, the present central government under Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, thought it would be in India’s interest to manufacture these naval warships in the country.
It will make India more independent for its defense equipment requirements. Besides, it will also give a huge boost to the ‘Make-in-India’ campaign of PM Modi. This being the reason the transfer of technology was of huge significance. With the technology transfer, Indian companies will be able to make components and parts for minesweepers in India.
