Mining slurry enters shops, homes in Bicholim after heavy rains

The heavy pre-monsoon rains on Monday evening washed away the slurry from a muddy road leading to a mine in Bicholim into houses and shops, causing huge damage.According to reports, on Monday night, boulders came crashing down, while the slurry was washed down in parts of Bicholim city, Sunder Peth, Atil Peth and petrol pump area.

The mining company pressed into service its machinery and manpower to remove the slurry. Locals and fire personnel also took part in the operations.Ramesh Gawas of Bicholim has filed a police complaint against the mining company, alleging that the company failed to initiate pre-monsoon works and has demanded an inquiry into the matter.Bicholim MLA Naresh Sawal has demanded that the mining company should give compensation to those who have suffered damages due to the slurry incident.Bicholim Municipal Council (BMC) Chairperson Rajaram Gaonkar said the incident occurred, as the company failed to take necessary precautions. “To avoid such type of incident in future, proper planning should be in place,” he added.Meanwhile, a joint meeting of deputy collector, mamlatdar, company officials and citizens has been convened on Wednesday to discuss the matter and to provide compensation to those who have suffered losses.
