Taking serious note of complaints from traditional fishermen regarding the banned bull trawling activity still prevalent along the Nerul, Candolim and Calangute coastline, Minister for Ports Jayesh Salgaonkar on Saturday assured to raise the issue with the government.
He was speaking at a Blue Revolution Scheme awareness camp in Nerul organised in association with the fisheries department to impart information to local fishermen about state and central schemes of the fisheries department.
During an interactive session, the fishermen complained about continuous bull trawling activity, purse seine fishing activity and non-receipt of subsidies.
“Bull trawling has been banned by the State government since over-exploitation of resources has affected the catch of traditional fishermen. But there have been complaints from fishermen of Nerul regarding continued bull trawling activities along Nerul, Candolim and Calangute coastline. They have even produced photos to prove their claims. This is a serious matter and I will take up this issue with the government,” said Salgaonkar.
Director of Fisheries Vinesh Arlekar later assured to direct his patrolling team to keep watch on bull trawling activities and take necessary action immediately.
The minister informed that the State government provides financial assistance of Rs 50,000 per year to registered fishing cooperative societies for the purchase of computers, etc.
There are three fishing cooperative societies in Nerul, but none of these three societies have availed of this scheme, the minister said.
“Similarly under the Centre’s Blue Revolution scheme, fishermen can get an autorickshaw for carrying of fish, motorcycle with fish box, insulated mini-truck, gear, etc. Fishermen can also get financial assistance of Rs 75,000 to renovate their houses. They should avail of these schemes,” said Salgaonkar.
Arlekar said the awareness camp was organised as most fishermen were unaware of schemes from the state and central governments.
