Cleanliness drives were organised at Miramar and Colva beaches as part of the World Environment Day on the theme ‘Beat the Plastic pollution’.
Students, teachers, environmentalists, Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) personnel and representatives of various media organisations took part in the cleanliness drive conducted by the Goa State Council for Science and Technology in association with Salgaonkar Law College at Miramar beach, here.
An official Sujit Kumar Dangare explained the ill effects of plastic on the
environment and human beings.
CISF Commander T Ajayan released a T-shirt and cap with the message “Beat the plastic pollution” on the occasion.
Later at a programme in Club Gaspar Dias, St Michael Convent High School, Anjuna, was awarded a cash prize of Rs 4,000 and a trophy for commendable work on environment, while the government school at Amona was also awarded a cash prize of Rs 4,000 for its commendable eco-club activities.
Goa State Council for Science and Technology Member Secretary Deepak Parab, Technical Officer Sanjeev Chodankar, Madhuri Shele, Deepak Kadam, Shenha Paril, Ramesh Pernekar and Vishram Naik were among those present at the function. Meanwhile, a beach cleaning programme was also conducted at Colva Beach in collaboration with Colva panchayat in the presence of Sarpanch Antonio Fernandes, Dy Sarpanch Mrs Rodrigues and panch members of Colva Panchayat.
Around 200 students and teachers from various schools, Vidhya Mandir High School (Cortalim), Infant Jesus High School (Colva), Auxilium High School (Benaulim), St Anthony’s High School (Majorda), Our Lady of Lourdes High School (Utorda), St Joseph Convent High School (Nagoa), St Aloysius High School (Benaulim) and St Mary’s High School (Varca) participated in the programme.
The Dy Sarpanch, in her inaugural message, urged the students to minimise the use of plastic, do
not litter plastic and keep the surrounding free
from plastic.
