St Andre MLA Viresh Borkar caught a truck driver dumping waste under the Atal Setu bridge, along the main road which leads to the capital city Panaji.
Later, Borkar called up the Old Goa police and handed over the driver along with the truck to the police, while also lodging a complaint to take strict action in the matter.
Speaking to The Goan, Borkar said this is the second time this truck was found dumping waste at the site.
“Earlier too, the same truck was caught and later released after imposition of a fine,” Borkar informed while slamming the government for paying lip service to the issue of garbage menace in the State.
“On one side the government talks about ‘Swachh Bharat, Swachh Goem’ and on the other side, ignores the waste dumping activity which is occurring right under the nose of the administration, along the main road leading to the capital city,” Borkar pointed out.
The MLA also came down heavily on the officials of the Corporation of the City of Panaji and the Merces panchayat for looking the other way as such activities are taking place in broad daylight.
“I will write to the Pollution Board as well as the Forest Department as the dumping activity has damaged the mangroves while also polluting the rivulet,” Borkar said and questioned whether such activity will boost tourism in Goa.
“The Tourism Minister is talking about bringing high-end tourists to the State. Will such tourists get attracted when the garbage scenario is getting worse by the passing day?” he posed.
