Deputy Speaker and Mapusa MLA Joshua D’Souza on Monday said that pre-monsoon works in Mapusa were on track and will be completed before the rains hit the State.
D’Souza also said that the Water Resources Department (WRD) has cleaned most of the major nullahs in town and expected this monsoon to be incident free.
“The civic body has carried out most of the pre-monsoon works like clearing of the drains in all the 20 wards and the main municipal market in town. Now, we are giving the finishing touch like lifting the sludge and stacked up garden waste at various spots,” D’Souza said.
The Mapusa MLA along with the Mapusa Municipal Council Chairperson Priya Mishal, councillors and municipality engineers inspected various pre-monsoon works undertaken by the municipality and the WRD.
D’Souza informed that the WRD has cleared most of the main nullahs in town but expected them to do a better job.
He said all the roads that have been dug up by the power department to lay the underground cables will be patched up before the arrival of monsoon.
“The work was supposed to start today but has been held up due to some technical issue. We are lucky that the arrival of the monsoon has been delayed by at least a week. It has given us some more time to tie some loose ends,” he said.
Every year, as a precautionary measure to minimise water-logging, the civic body removes silt from all major and minor drains, to allow free flow of water during heavy rain.
MMC Chairperson Priya Mishal told The Goan that the municipal council has completed two rounds of pre-monsoon works such as clearing drains.
“We had started desilting work one month ago. Almost all the wards have been covered and de-silting of market drains has also been completed. Work in the market was done during the night not to inconvenience people visiting the market,” Mishal said.
The electricity department has also carried out its pre-monsoon exercise such as trimming tree branches that come in contact with overhead power lines.
