The dream of coming up with a new market complex in Aldona may finally come to fruition.
Plans are afoot to get all stakeholders on board and bring about unanimity over the proposal of coming up with a new and bigger market building in the village.
Aldona MLA Carlos Ferreira held preliminary meetings with the vendors of the old dilapidated market, the Church Fabrica and the Aldona panchayat, as part of his push to demolish the existing dangerous market building and rebuild a new bigger market providing better facilities for vendors and buyers alike.
Ferreira said he has scheduled meetings with several other stakeholders including the Church Fabrica and other bodies before coming up with a concrete proposal, which the government has promised to take forward.
“The Aldona market is one of my priority areas. We called for a meeting of the market vendors to explain the modalities. They will have to move out of the market if it is to be demolished. In the meantime, we have to make an alternate arrangement for them,” Ferreira said.
“I want to take everyone along with me to build the market. We explained to them what is being done and what is not. There is good cooperation from everybody and everyone has agreed,” he added.
He said the Fabrica has also agreed to offer more land so that we can develop a better market.
He informed that several meetings have been lined up with various stakeholders in the next two days and hopefully things will crystallise on the plans.
The Aldona MLA said that he had broached the subject with Chief Minister Pramod Sawant who assured to approve the project as soon as he gets the proposal.
“I'm confident the government will help us in building this market,” he said.
The present market building is in bad shape and has been declared unsafe for occupation. The building has developed wide cracks on the walls while the plaster of the ceiling has been falling down at several places.
