The decision has been taken to protest against the ban imposed by Karnataka authorities on the movement of heavy vehicles on the Anmod-Ramnagar section of the Belagavi-Goa NH748 (NH4A).
The ban was imposed on multi-axle vehicles by the Deputy Commissioner (Karwar) in 2018 in wake of the four-laning of the national highway.
According to transporters, they have to cover an additional distance of about 100 kms to reach Belagavi and other parts of north Karnataka via Karwar. This is not only adding to the costs but causing an inadvertent delay in reaching the destinations.
“Apart from the ban imposed in 2018, another order was issued by the Deputy Commissioner Karwar in September 2020 banning the movement of all types of vehicles on the Anmod-Ramnagar section of the national highway,” said one transporter, while speaking to media persons at the Goa-Karnataka border on Wednesday.
“While the movement of vehicles including six-wheeler trucks has started plying on this highway, authorities have totally banned the movement of multi-axle vehicles, due to which we are facing huge inconvenience. We have to go via Karwar, Hubballi section which is very long distance.”
The transporters have also urged the Karnataka and Goa authorities to coordinate with each other and discuss the issue in order to relieve them from the huge inconvenience. A memorandum will be also given to the North Goa Collector and Karwar Deputy Commissioner, the transporters said.
Demanding that the authorities should allow the movement of multi-axle vehicles from 10 pm to 6 am every day, they have threatened to intensify their agitation if authorities do not concede to their demands.
