The 300-odd permanent Margao Municipal Council employees, besides the huge army of daily wage workers, are hoping the banks will clear their salaries before December 23.
They are keeping their fingers crossed given their bitter experience ever since the civic body switched over to the Electronic Clearance System (ECS) from the time-tested manual distribution of salaries. Inquiries by The Goan revealed that the while the dealing sections have cleared the salary bills, anxious workers are indeed keeping their fingers crossed whether the banks will clear their salaries before December 23, the date set by the government to disburse salaries to its employees.
Just two days to go for the weekend, the employees pointed out that the ECS system has failed to provide them timely payments. Unlike in the past, when the employees used to receive their salary payment right on the last day of the month, switch over to the ECS system has delayed the salary disbursement by a few days now.
"Something has gone wrong somewhere in the civic body. It should time the presentation of the cheques to the banks so that the employees receive their salaries on the last day of the month," remarked a senior MMC official, who too is not sure whether he will get his salary before Christmas.
What's interesting to note is that while the office administration had cleared the salary bills of the 300-odd permanent staff and workers, the bills of the army of daily wage workers are yet to be cleared till date.
Sources in the know pointed out that while the Chief Officer Johnson Fernandes has cleared the salary bills of the permanent staff and employees, he is believed to have not yet signed the cheque.
