Margao Municipal Chief Officer Deepali Naik has ordered a probe into the alleged birth certificate scam in the civic body after members of the Fernandes family called on her to demand action against the erring staff.
The Chief Officer later told the media that she would ask the Municipal Accounts and Administration officer, Elekar to inquire into the birth certificate episode in order to verify the allegations made by the Fernandes family and initiate action if necessary.
“I can say with confidence that the staff may not be directly involved in the episode since they issue hundreds of certificates every day. It is not humanly possible to check each and every birth certificate registered and issued by the civic body,” she said.
Replying to a question, the Chief Officer said depending on the nature of the inquiry report, the civic body will initiate further action, by lodging a complaint with the police and moving the appropriate authority for withdrawal of the certificates.
