The Margao Municipal Council has decided to cash in on the eight-day Purumentachem feast at the Old market, beginning from Sunday to enrich its coffers.
The MMC has capped a fixed price of Rs 4,700 per stall, inclusive of the garbage collection fees and hopes to earn a minimum Rs 10 lakh from the feast fair.
MMC officials pointed out that the revenue may touch Rs 12-13 lakh if all the stalls at stake are grabbed by the hawkers/vendors.
After delaying for days now, the MMC opened the allotment of stalls at the Margao Municipal building on Thursday evening. The process of allotment of the stalls will continue on Friday, with officials saying that the MMC will keep open the allotment even on Saturday if the need arises.
This is the first time after many years that the MMC has restarted allotment of the fair stalls at the Municipal building, expected to bring about transparency in the allotment process.
Meanwhile, a delegation of hawkers and vendors, who came to meet the Chairperson Lyndon Pereira has stressed on the need to improve sanitation facilities at the fair.
