Monday saw stench at the SGPDA parking lot with waste generated in the mega retail market dumped at the area for collection and transportation by Margao Municipal body.

As the garbage lay scattered on the parking lot and stray cattle feasting on the waste dumped there by the PDA, Margao Municipal officials spoke to PDA officials with a plea to put a system in place to facilitate civic workers to lift the waste.

As video of the scattered waste went viral, indicating the absence of any waste management system in place, Margao Municipal Engineer Deepak Desai inspected the area, only to realise there’s no waste disposal mechanism put in place at the PDA market. “The MMC have never refused to collect waste generated in the PDA mega retail market, But, the PDA contractor, supervisors should get the waste segregated before handing over the same to the MMC workers for transportation”, Desai said.

That’s not all. The MMC engineer made a strong pitch for storing the garbage generated in the market in garbage bins after segregation.

“Dumping the market waste on the parking lot does not augur well for the planning body. The MMC deputes its workers to collect the waste, but what they often find out is waste scattered all round the place”, he added.

As far as the mixed waste dumps taking shape on the periphery of the market complex, the MMC engineer said the only solution lies in the PDA deploying gang of labourers for a week to segregate the waste and store the same in garbage bins to facilitate the MMC workers to transport the same to Sonsodo.

“I feel that the PDA should install garbage bins all around the market for the traders, vendors and the shopkeeper to dispose of their waste. It is apparent that waste from the market finds its way towards the market periphery”, he added.
