MAPUSA
The Mapusa Municipal Council (MMC) on Wednesday on the direction of the High Court of Bombay at Goa sealed the premises of an illegal construction in Comunidade land in Cunchelim, Mapusa.
The civic body had initially issued a stop-work order on the construction and later sealed the ground-plus-one construction.
“We have taken the decision to seal the premises on the direction of the High Court. The court had directed to stop the ongoing work and seal the premises. Accordingly, we have sealed the premises,” said Chandrakant Shetkar, Chief Officer of Mapusa Municipal Council.
A resident of Cunchelim had filed a complaint against the illegal construction before government authorities concerned and later moved the High Court.
RTI activist Jawaharlal Shetye informed that there are several such illegal structures in the jurisdiction of Mapusa municipality but the civic body fails to take action against them.
“This order shows that since government authorities fail to take action the only option left for a citizen is to approach the court,” Shetye said.
The Municipal Engineer, Prashant Narverka, municipal inspector, Shekar Gauns along with other staff carried out the sealing of the premises.
