MARGAO
In an apparent bid to find a solution to foul odour emanating from the existing Sonsodo dumpyard, the Margao Municipal Council on Tuesday witnessed a demonstration by a company, which claimed that it can resolve the issue as well as expedite the waste composting process.
A cautious Margao Municipal Council Chief Officer Siddivinayak Naik, however, told the media after the demonstration that the civic body will take a call on whether to rope in the company to tackle the Sonsodo waste.
Company representatives as well as MMC officials led by the Chief Officer descended on the Sonsodo site on Tuesday morning for a demonstration as the company claimed that it can offer a solution to the waste problem.
Company staffers sprayed liquid on the waste brought in at the waste dump from the city’s black spots, promising that it will control foul odour as well as expedite the composting process.
“The company has claimed that the bacteria sprayed on the waste will reduce the smell and expedite composting. Normally, they say that composting process takes around 70 days, but the bacteria sprayed over the waste can reduce the entire process by 25 days,” he added.
While saying that civic officials will again take a look at the demonstration at the dump yard on Wednesday, the Chief Officer said the council will take a further call on the question of engaging the company or not.
“Our waste problem has two aspects, including the fresh waste and the existing waste, which is not only an eyesore, but is the cause of the foul smell. We will find out whether the company can offer any solution,” the Chief Officer added.
Company representative Prasad Bande, who is believed to have given a similar demonstration to the CCP on Monday, said that the solution will control foul odour and ensure that the leachate don’t contaminate the
ground water.
