With monsoons round the corner, the South Goa district administration has said work is underway to fence the high risk abandoned quarries in the district.

In fact, South Goa Additional Collector Srinet Kothwale informed that South Goa District Disaster Management Authority has identified a set of high-risk abandoned quarries in South Goa district. “The same were taken up for fencing on a priority basis. Accordingly, works were tendered for 16 quarries across all the seven talukas of the district. Work order was issued in October 2024,” he said.

The Additional Collector has further pointed out that around 85 per cent of the fencing work has been completed, except for the two quarries in Quepem taluka.

To a question, Kothwale informed that the district administration has decided to take up fencing of the abandoned quarries in phases. “We have taken up works on the fencing of the high risk abandoned quarries. The administration hopes that the works will be completed before the onset of monsoons. Fencing work of the remaining quarries will be taken up in a phased manner,” he said.

Drowning deaths at the abandoned stone quarries have been common during the monsoons with youngsters heading for swimming at the abandoned stone quarries during the monsoons.

To a question, the Additional Collector has said the administration is committed to fence all the high-risk abandoned quarries in a phased manner. “We are monitoring the ongoing fencing works at the high-risk abandoned quarries. Our officials are closely monitoring the work in progress to ensure that work on the 16 tendered quarries is completed before the onset of monsoons,” he asserted.
