Speaking to the media, MMC Chairperson Deepak Naik said the MMC staff on Tuesday informed all the handcart operators to stop their business in the port town, as most of the handcarts are illegal.
“There are about 350 licensed handcarts, while another 300 are illegal and to curb illegal business, MMC has directed everyone to shut down their operations. We have been receiving complaints from the citizens and vehicle owners that handcarts are occupying the roads and footpaths to carry out their illegal business,” said Deepak.
“Selling fruits and other eatables along the busy roads and on the footpaths is causing a hardship for pedestrians and the vehicles.”
“Acting on the direction, some handcart operators met me and the chief officer requesting to allow them to carry out their business as they have all the documents and permissions,” he added.
When contacted, CO Deepali Naik said the handcarts are not having FDA permission, while some have failed to renew their MMC licenses.
“More than legal handcarts, there are illegal handcarts operating in the port town and causing hindrance to all and to curb the illegality and stop the menace, we have decided to allow only those handcarts who have valid permissions,” added Deepali.
