Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) Chairperson Deepak Naik on Friday reviewed his performance since he took over in November 2015.

Briefing the media, Naik said when he took over, the council was in total bankruptcy and there was no funds even to pay the staff, due to which they went on a two-day strike in December 2015.

“Financial problems also hindered developmental works and other projects and when I along with the councillors and recovery staff visited shops and other establishments, then only money started flowing in,” he said.

“Though we managed to recover part of the amount, it wasn't sufficient to make ends meet and non-release of grants by the government further added to our problems.”

“From November 2015 to March 2016 after collecting sops, house tax and other outstandings, we managed to raise Rs 1.37 crore and from April to May this year, we recovered another Rs 1.32 crore,” added Naik.

Naik said as long as financial status in not stable, MMC will not be able to carry out any developmental works. He said due to financial constraints, MMC could not pay bills of PWD (water) and electricity and warned that both the agencies can disconnect the supply any time.

Naik added that from 2014, the council did not get any grants, due to which they could not pay their retired employees in full.

Naik informed that despite of less workforce, MMC could manage to carry out the much needed jobs and other per-monsoon works in all the wards.

Highlighting his achievement after taking over as chairperson, Naik said he started the promotion process, which was not taken up during the last several years.

He said he managed to fulfill most of the demands of the union and is in the process of revising the lapsed post.

“I had three meetings with the chief minister and the deputy chief minister and the outcome is that the council received Rs 5 crore salary grants and this is my biggest achievement,” said Naik.

“The government has also released another Rs 1.10 crore towards pre-monsoon work and to take up other developmental works in all the wards,” added Naik.

“The golden jubilee project construction of the chief officer's bungalow will be tendered in the next 15 days for the seventh time and this time the construction will start.”

Naik praised the earlier council for passing resolutions towards beautification of Vaddem lake and construction of the Vasco fish market. “The development work of the Baina Power House area is in the pipeline and will be taken up shortly,” he added.
