Mormugao CO's ultimatum to Railways on garbage dump

Taking the Vasco Railway officials to task for reportedly dumping garbage in their premises, the Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) Chief Officer Agnelo Fernandes on Wednesday gave an ultimatum of one month to the Railways to clear the garbage dump.
Fernandes had convened a meeting with the Vasco Railway officials in this connection on Wednesday. hE had earlier issued a notice to the Railway officials and also summoned them for a meeting after receiving complaints from a school that garbage collected by the Railways was dumped close to the school.
"The stench is unbearable and children are falling sick. The garbage collected by the Railways is also an invitation to mosquitoes, snakes, rodents, dogs and other disease-carrying animals. The children are unable to have their mid-day meals due to the stench. This is unacceptable and I will not tolerate it," warned Fernandes.
Fernandes said students' safety was of utmost importance and directions have been given to the Railways to clear the unsegregated waste within 30 days. "I have given them one-month ultimatum to clear the garbage. At the same time I have told them they could give their garbage to MMC, but in a segregated manner," added Fernandes.
Fernandes said the Railways contractor collects all the food waste from trains and dumps it in the railway dump yard. "This creates stink in nearby areas, including the school," he said.
When contacted, a railway official, R K Naik said: "We came here following a call from the CO. Our superiors will be informed about the meeting. We have been directed to give garbage to
MMC instead of dumping it at our site."
