Forget about swanky shopping complexes, the next big starred attraction in the port town could well be the Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) complex itself.

Be prepared to find lifts, renovated washrooms, new interiors and a heritage architecture, as part of a major facelift planned at the MMC heritage complex.

The Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) heritage complex which houses the municipal offices and various other government offices is set to get a major face lift as the building is being taken up for renovation.

Sources in the MMC said the renovation project of the MMC complex has been approved and is in the tendering process with the help of Urban Development Minister Milind Naik.

“The MMC complex, which has four access points, will soon have gates, lifts, renovated washrooms and a lot more changes, while the heritage architecture will be kept intact,” said a source.

“The building is likely to get ethnic lighting, fresh a coat of paint and will be one of the star attractions of the port town. The interiors are likely to be renovated while keeping the heritage elements intact.”

“There was a long-pending plan to renovate this complex but it did not take place all this while. However, we have been informed that renovation of this complex will be taken up soon,” the source added.

Speaking to reporters, Urban Development Minister Milind Naik confirmed that the MMC building would be taken up for renovation.  “Renovation of the MMC complex had been in the list for long. After I took over as Urban Development Minister, the file came to me. I have cleared the file for the renovation of the MMC building and the works are estimated at around Rs 7 crore.

“The work has also been tendered and it can begin any moment. The building will also have gates at all access points. The gates are important because there have been cases of nuisance and anti-social activities inside the building,” said Naik.
