The Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) has decided to install two biodigester plants, each with a capacity to of 5 tonnes per day (TPD), in the municipality to handle and treat wet garbage collected everyday.

MMC Chairperson Damodar Kaskar told reporters on Monday that the two plants have almost been approved by GSUDA and that, an MMC team was also sent to Pune to study operations of the biodigester plants.

"We will set up two such biodigester plants to treat wet waste. We collect around 10 tonnes of wet waste on a daily basis. While the wet waste is treated into biogas, we will use the biogas to generate electricity to run the plant.”

“If excess electricity is generated, we will use it to power street lights around the plants. We will also treat water from the wet waste and re-use it for gardening purposes. Besides, another byproduct is manure which can be used for plants and trees as well. It will be a win-win situation," said Kaskar.

MMC Councillor Vinod Kinlekar said an MMC team had gone on a study visit to the garbage treatment plant of the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC).

“A 11-member team comprising MMC Chairperson Damodar Kaskar, three councillors, Prajay Mayekar, Ameya Chopdekar and I, as well as engineers and staff of MMC visited the PMC waste treatment plant on Saturday and returned on Sunday.”

“We were given a demonstration of the entire operation and we were happy to see how wet waste is treated. We also saw the other benefits while treating the waste. The biogas prepared is used to generate electricity, the slurry is converted into manure and water from wet waste is treated and reused for gardening," said Kinlekar.
