CANACONA
A mother and her daughter who had been reported missing from their residence at Tamnem in Loliem-Polem on Sunday have been found dead in the locality.
According to Canacona police, Maya Anand Pagi (50) and her married daughter, Ankita Prakash Polgi (26) had been reported missing from their residence and residents had launched a search operation on Sunday evening.
The body of Ankita was later retrieved from a pond close to their house late Sunday evening, while the body of Maya was found early Monday morning hanging to a tree about 500 metres from the pond.
Locals said Ankita, who was residing in Navelim, had gone to her maternal home to take care of her ailing father.
Some relatives had gone to visit Maya's husband, Anand, who suffered a stroke recently, and found Maya and Ankita missing from the house.
The police was notified and the body of Ankita was located in a nearby pond. Police suspect that Ankita may have gone to answer nature’s call and accidentally fell and drowned in the pond. The body was later sent to Margao for an autopsy.
Efforts to locate Maya then continued the entire night and her body was later found hanging to a tree in the nearby bushes on Monday morning.
Canacona LPSI Rifa Barretto said the 50-year-old woman was reportedly not in sound mind and is suspected to have committed suicide, but added that an autopsy would ascertain the exact cause of death.
