A day after the Fatorda Congress claimed that Vijai Sardesai’s councillors were involved in felling coconut trees at Murida, local residents of the area on Friday refuted the allegation saying that not a single tree was chopped down in the area.
In fact, one of the residents Sarita Malwankar stated that the coconut tree, which was found on the ground, was leaning on another tree since the last two years and fell down after the branch gave way. “We are the residents of this locality and we thank the MLA for clearing around 20 truck load of waste lying on this area. This area was all littered with waste all this time and now is clean and garbage free,” Sarita said.
Councillor Peter Fernandes said the allegations that coconut trees have been cut down at Murida has no basis. “Not a single tree has been cut down,” he reiterated, adding that the MLA has plans to plant coconut saplings all around the nullah after completion of the work on the retaining wall.
On allegations that a spring has been buried by the ongoing work on the retaining wall, Peter denied the allegation, but hastened to add that mud that has found its way in the nullah will be removed once work on the retaining wall is completed. “We are only desilting the nullah at a cost of Rs 8 lakh. Mud that has found its way in the nullah will be cleared,” he said.
