Nachinola grapples with menace of public drinking, broken bottles

The otherwise serene village of Nachinola is grappling with a persistent nuisance: public consumption of alcohol and the reckless breaking of glass bottles in open spaces.

This issue, which has plagued the community for years, has reached a tipping point, raising serious concerns about public safety and the village's overall harmony.

In a recent incident, shattered beer bottles were discovered scattered along the road and an open space near the local football ground.

Glass shards littered the area, posing significant risks to players and residents who frequent the spot for evening walks.

Additionally, garbage strewn along the road further aggravated the situation, creating an unsightly and hazardous environment.

Local Sarpanch Freddy Fernandes expressed his alarm over the issue, emphasising the danger posed to the community.

“The broken glass and litter not only endanger people but also disrupt the peace of our village,” Fernandes said.

He has lodged a formal complaint with the Mapusa Police, urging them to register an FIR against unknown persons responsible for the nuisance.

In his complaint, Fernandes called for a thorough investigation to identify and penalise the culprits.

He also appealed to authorities to take strict measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.

"Effective and consistent patrolling by the police is essential to prevent such incidents," said Fernandes.

The growing trend of public drinking and associated littering has become a recurring problem for Nachinola.

Concerned locals have repeatedly highlighted the risks posed to children, pedestrians and even animals, alongside the detrimental impact on the village’s aesthetics.

Efforts to curb the menace have so far yielded limited results, leaving residents frustrated.

As the village explores potential solutions, many are calling for stricter enforcement of laws and greater community involvement to restore peace and cleanliness to Nachinola's streets.

The situation has prompted questions about whether stronger action by authorities and increased public awareness can bring lasting relief to this troubled village.
