PANAJI: Panaji Police on Monday afternoon recovered the body of Mohan Mehta (71) from River Mandovi. Police was on the lookout for Mehta, who had been absconding since the death of his wife, Chandrakala Mehta (61), under suspicious circumstances in Navelim on April 14.
Panaji Police said they had received a call at about 1.20 pm informing them of a body floating near the Ribandar causeway.
The body has been for post-mortem to Goa Medical College and Hospital, Bambolim. PSI Aditya Velip is investigating the case.
The police also found a suicide note and cash worth Rs 4001 in a plastic bottle tied to the waist of the deceased. The note was signed as ‘Mohan Mehta’ and said that he was living alone and had no relatives.
A request in the suicide note states that the body be donated to Goa Medical College or the attached money be used for the final rites.
Mehta, a native of Karwar, was suspected to be involved in the murder of his wife, Chandrakala, who was found dead on the ground outside the building at Dongrim. The couple owned a flat in the building since 2013.
Margao Police had registered an offence under Section 302 of IPC and had initiated an investigation into the matter.
Subsequently, it had come to light that the husband and wife had differences and were not on talking terms. Also, complaints were reportedly lodged by them against each other at Margao Police Station.
During their primary investigation, Margao police had found certain injuries on Chndrakala’s body. In addition to this, numerous items in the flat were found damaged and there were several blood stains in the flat. Police had also said that the toilet door was locked from inside and its window glass was broken.
