The Navy has written to the State government over an excavation carried out near the naval compound near Bogmalo citing security reasons.

Naval Flag Officer Goa Area (FOGA) Philipose Pnyumootil was speaking to reporters on Tuesday along the sidelines of a function organised by All India Malayalee Association (AIMA).

“There were no approvals taken whatsoever from the Navy in regards to carrying out excavation outside the naval compound as there are certain security restrictions.”

“Naval laws restrict development of land close to naval land limits and any excavation close to the airport could further cause hindrance to aviation movement, especially as the excavation is close to the landing zone of several aircraft at Dabolim Airport,” he said.

Naval officials also claimed that locals in Mangor were not allowing the Navy to erect a compound wall to conceal the naval area and blamed local administration of supporting the locals in the move.

Reacting to reports that Vasco police had detained a person for cultivating ganja plants in a building under construction close to navy area, Pnyumootil replied, “The Navy has completely cleared the area. There were some encroachments in Naval area at Mangor and that Navy will occupy the land once the building is completed.”

Naval authorities clarified that ganja cultivation, as reported by Vasco police, was being done in property close to naval land that was not guarded. They have now decided to write to the State government regarding opposition by locals against efforts by the Navy to erect a boundary on naval property.
