Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) on Thursday will launch first part of its campaign against coal dust pollution in the port town by circulating handouts through newspapers and personally distributing to the general public.
The handouts carry the slogans 'We invite tourists to Goa for healthy Sun Tan and not to MRI scan', 'In Mormugao, wombs are turning into tombs, stop coal pollution', 'you only want to mint crores at the cost of making every bird look like crows'.
Speaking to The Goan, Nasir Khan said they are exhausted by complaining to all the authorities concerned and the efforts have not yielded any result.
“It's sad that the government and the authorities concerned are turning a blind eye to coal dust pollution and to the sufferings of small children and elderly citizens,” said Khan.
“Even the employees of both the coal handling companies are subjected to coal dust pollution, as no one is provided with face mask to stop inhaling of coal dust particles,” added Khan.
“The companies are only interested in making money at the cost of health of the port town citizens, their children and employees and with the blessing of the government and authorities concerned.”
Khan said this is the first step of creating awareness on coal dust pollution in the port town. “Later, NCP would convene small meetings of fruits, vegetables and fish vendors and inform them how coal dust pollution is affecting their health and business,” said Khan.
“We will not keep silent till coal handling in the port is completely stopped and if the government still remains silent, then we will resort to a larger form of protest by coming on streets and stop transportation of coal by road,” warned Khan.
