A 26-year-old Nepali on Monday was arrested on charges of stealing 31 mobile handsets, phone accessories, a camera and other items, worth Rs 1 lakh, from a shop at St Cruz market.
According to Agassaim police, ASI Jairam Kunkolkar, HC Surendra Naik and PC driver Paresh Bhat were on night patrolling duty when they intercepted a Hero Honda motorcycle near 2STC Bambolim without a number plate.
Police said they caught a person carrying a shoulder bag, while two others fled from the spot under the cover of darkness. On questioning the apprehended person, he disclosed his name as Jivan Tika Parial from Nepal, but residing at Panaji market.
On checking his shoulder bag, the police found 31 mobile handsets of different brands, mobile accessories, camera and other items, all worth Rs 1 lakh, informed police.
Police said the booty was stolen from St Cruz market on the intervening night of June 20 and 21, after breaking the shutter lock. The black-coloured Hero Honda motorcycle without the number plate was found to be stolen from Ponda on June 15.
On verifying of its registration number, it was found that the motorcycle (GA-01-K-5706) belonged to Prameya Pandurang Prabhu Miringke of Ponda. Police is investigating the case.
