CANACONA

Stating that the State government has finally granted financial approval and work order for the construction of the new Canacona Municipal Council (CMC) building, Dy Speaker and Canacona MLA Isidore Fernandes said work on the project would begin this month.

Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on Tuesday handed over the financial approval and work order for the construction of the CMC administrative building to Fernandes.

The Goa State Urban Development Agency (GSUDA) will take up construction of the project at an estimated cost of Rs 10 crore.

The present Portuguese-era structure will be demolished and replaced by a ground plus two-storeyed building, which will house the CMC administrative offices and a commercial complex.

According to details, the reconstruction and extension of the Canacona Municipal Building has been entrusted to a contractor, who has been asked to comply with formalities within 10 days and to takeover the site before starting construction work.

It may be recalled that Urban Development Minister Milind Naik had laid the foundation stone for the new CMC complex at Chaudi on October 20, 2020, in the presence of Dy Speaker Isidore Fernandes, DMA officers and GSUDA engineers.

Fernandes said the work order got delayed due to financial constraints, but the project was finally approved in the last cabinet meeting.

"I thank Chief Minister Pramod Sawant and Urban Development Minister Milind Naik for clearing all the hurdles. The work will begin this month and I have also forwarded a file moved by present council to develop a parking area behind the upcoming new municipal building, which will also be undertaken, once approved,” said Fernandes.
