Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar on Monday said that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will chalk out a different strategy for five constituencies in Salcete taluka, none of which are represented by the BJP.
He was speaking after holding the second review meeting with BJP MLAs and office-bearers ahead of the upcoming State Legislative Assembly polls 2017.
“As per what we see, five constituencies in Salcete are fragile for which we will have to plan a different strategy. In Margao, Fatorda and Cuncolim, we are in a pretty good condition,” said Parrikar, who is also former Chief Minister of the State.
Presently, Nuvem is represented by Goa Vikas Party (GVP) MLA Micky Pacheco, Curtorim by Congress MLA Alexio Reginaldo Lourenco, Benaulim by GVP MLA Caetano Silva, Navelim by Independent MLA Avertano Furtado and Velim by Independent MLA Benjamin Silva.
“The meeting was addressed by Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar and President Vinay Tendulkar. We heard the issues raised by the MLAs and also advised them on how to go ahead for the elections”, he said.
Exuding confidence that BJP will get a majority in the upcoming polls, Parrikar Said, “Already our National President Amit Shah has given us the target of 26 seats. So how can I give a separate target?”
When asked if BJP’s alliance with MGP will continue in the upcoming polls, he said, “We want to contest all 40 seats taking all our alliance partners together. We already have an alliance with MGP. Alliance with independent MLAs and other local political parties will come up when actual elections are near.”
Stating that political strategy is being discussed with every MLA individually, he said, “Once the strategy with MLAs is discussed, we will hold discussions with the tentative candidates. Actual declaration will come subsequently. These are pre-election preparations and basically spot analysis, wherein we discuss the strengths and weaknesses, opportunity and threat with them. These are the common aspects of any political setup which are discussed. This is not new for BJP.”
Meanwhile when asked if Goa Suraksha Manch, the newly formed political party by Bharatiya Bhasha Suraksha Manch (BBSM) will affect BJP, he said, “Don’t ask me about other political parties. All my seats are very comfortable. We are very positive in the election and we are very confident that we will win better than last time.”
