CANACONA
The re-appearance of garbage in the backyard of Canacona Municipal Council (CMC) has angered the NGO 'Goenkar', especially after the organisation had laboured to clean the site barely a fortnight ago.
'Goenkar' in collaboration with CMC had cleared tonnes of garbage dumped behind the municipal council by engaging its own manpower and had later dispatching truckloads of the baled garbage to Karnataka for disposal.
“Goenkar President Jack Fernandes and I had gone behind the CMC office to check on things and we were shocked to see the entire place in a mess once again,” said Goenkar General Secretary Vikas Bhagat.
“The baling machine is rotting outside in the rain We had made so much improvement at the site but things are back to square one,” he added.
Added Goenkar president Jack Fernandes: “The chief officer had told us he just took over this job and it would him take some time to look into the matter. Taking care of things and equipment is a common sense, why does this have to take time?”
“In the past few months, CMC's chief officer has changed three times, the chief accountant has been changed and other officials have also been changed. Why,” asked Fernandes.
“It appears that some are trying to sabotage our work. But we will not be defeated. The more they try to take us back, the more we will work towards a cleaner Canacona,” he added.
John Coutinho, another executive member, also voiced his displeasure.
“Very sad day and I feel sorry for Canacona as many have to suffer because of the stupidity of a few. We were almost there and Canacona could have been clean. I curse those few,” said Coutinho.
